Explore Interests, Investigate Post-High School Options, and Set Post-High Goals

To pursue a Path to Graduation that is meaningful, it is critical that students identify their interests, investigate post-high school opportunities related to those interests, and set post-high schools goals which will guide their selection of courses and learning experiences.  Career exploration and planning is an important part of the Path to Graduation, and career guidance and education planning activities are provided at every grade level.  Among these activities are...

Identifying your interests, investigate careers, and explore post-high school education programs using the WOIS Career Information System

Exploring Field of Study offerings of interest which you can integrate into your plan for High School and Beyond

Exploring Dual-Enrollment programs and courses where you can earn both high school and college credit

Exploring Dual-Credit Equivalency courses which can satisfy more than one graduation requirement through a single course

If applicable, review the Minimum Admission Requirements for Washington's 4-Year Colleges and Universities

Create A Plan for High School and Beyond

Developing a solid plan for High School and Beyond is absolutely essential if one is to be successful in meeting graduation requirements and attaining their post-high school goals.  Beginning in 9th grade and continuing throughout high school, all students are required to develop and maintain an education plan in their WOIS Portfolio which identifies their post-high school goals and outlines courses meeting the following requirements...

Required Components of the High School and Beyond Plan

Your post-high school goal for the year after graduation

Overview of selected courses in grades 9-12 meeting 22 required credits across multiple subject areas

A 2 credit program of study in grades 10-12 within a Field of Study area of interest

Any courses needed to meet admission requirements for particular post-high school programs of interest

Build Your Electronic Portfolio

Begnning in 9th grade and continuing throughout high school, students are begin their WOIS Electronic Portfolio where they are required to collect evidence of their learning, career exploration education planning.  It is important that students add required materials and content to their portfolio annually.  A checklist of these required elements by grade level can be found below in the "Monitor Your Progress" section below.

Required WOIS Portfolio Content

Student work including Graduation Performance Tasks, and best works from Field of Study courses and others

Career exploration work including interest inventories, career research, and identified career goals

Education planning research including investigations of post-high school training programs of interest

Your High School and Beyond Plan

Monitor Your Progress Regularly

It is important that students monitor their progress toward graduation to make sure they are meeting requirements, understanding important information, taking advantage of opportunities, and completing important tasks and credit targets at each grade level.

Important Information to Monitor Each Year

Required content and work samples that need to be added to your Electronic Portfolio each year

Information about opportunities and requirements related to each grade level

Important tasks that need to be completed at each grade level.

Credit targets at each grade level to monitor pace for on-time graduation

Make Adjustments and Incorporate Interventions When Needed

At times you may find that your plans may need to be adjusted because of changed goals or set-backs in your progress toward meeting graduation requirements.  Rather than giving up, it is important that you make adjustments to your plans and incorporate interventions to help get you back on track. The following are the two most common setbacks along the Path to Graduation:

Falling Behind in Credits

When it is clear that you are failing to keep pace with the number of credits earned each year to graduate on time, the following interventions have proven to be helpful for a number of students.

  • Make an appointment with your school counselor.
  • Look at courses which grant equivalency credit.  These courses allow you to meet two graduation requirements through one course.
  • Ask about online credit retrieval courses available during the school year.
  • Take advantage of summer school programs offering credit retrieval.

Not Meeting Standard in One or More Areas of the WASL

Not meeting standard in one or more areas of the WASL on your first attempt is not the end of the world, and there are many options available to you to meet this requirement.  If you find yourself in this situation, make an appointment with your counselor immediately to discuss the options available to you.  For a summary of these options, click here.
