Automotive Technology - Nick Douglas & Darrin Dysart Print E-mail

Nick Douglas came to the Automotive Technology program at Lynnwood High with an accomplished skill set.  While earning excellent marks, he assisted the less skilled students who benefited from his leadership.  Nick went on to Advanced Automotive Technology at Meadowdale High and qualified for the State Championships at the regional Skills USA competition.  Nick took first place in Automotive Maintenance at State.

Outside of the classroom Nick drag races his 1968 Dodge Dart at the Pacific Raceways.  He has also raced at the Mopar Nationals and other events during his racing career.

Biotechnology - Jailin Wu Print E-mail

altJialin Wu is currently enrolled in Biotechnology, a class where students develop lab skills typical of the biotech and biomedicine industries.

Jialin has developed the abilities to perform techniques such as DNA extractions, DNA fingerprinting, genetic engineering, bacterial culturing, and protein purification.  Jialin has also contributed to authentic genetic research in collaboration with the University of Washington as a part of this course and recently participated in the regional Bio Expo Science Fair with a science journalism project on ALS, otherwise known as LouGerig’s Disease.

In class, Jialin shows excellent abilities as a young scientist.  Not only does she have the ability to perform sophisticated protocols, but she also consistently demonstrates that she understands the science that underlies these labs.

Beyond science and academics, Jialin is an active member of the Chantels- Lynnwood’s Jazz Choir, and contributes as both a vocalist and an accomplished pianist.  She volunteers twice weekly at Martha Lake Elementary.

It is my pleasure to present this award to Jialin Wu for her work in Biotechnology class.

Business - Kari Mitchell Print E-mail

FACSE - Crystal Curl Print E-mail

altI’d like to introduce Crystal Curl, a senior at Meadowdale High School.  Crystal has taken all three of our culinary classes, Chef School, Maverick Chef 1 and Maverick Chef 2. I have had the pleasure of watching her interests and knowledge grow as she has moved up through the different levels.  Up until her junior year she did not know what she wanted to do for a career. During a presentation in Maverick Chef by a representative from the Art Institute of Seattle she realized that she was interested in learning more about the school. She attended a three day studio workshop at the Institute and decided to apply.  She has been accepted and will begin classes in July 2009.  After her training there she plans to work in a restaurant, own a small restaurant or continue with college with a possible goal of teaching.  She would also like to study and work abroad.

Crystal has always had an interest in cooking.  As a young child she enjoyed watching her grandparents prepare meals.  She began helping them and became intrigued with trying new recipes and adding different ingredients.  She began cooking more and more of the dinners for her family and eventually took over making them all.  She loves the planning and shopping that goes along with the preparation.  As Crystal has said,” cooking is amazing because there are just so many combinations and so many opportunities to say “mmmm, that is the best thing I have ever tasted.”  We wish her well with her culinary training and career.

FACSE - Jessica Scott Print E-mail

altIt is our honor at Edmonds-Woodway High School tonight to honor one of our finest students, Jessica Scott. Jessica has contributed much within the Family and Consumer Science Department. Jessica is a student who has achieved great success working through Chef School 1, Chef School 2, and has helped to develop our own variation of Warrior Chef @ EWHS through working with our Student Store.

Jessica has great vision and competency when it comes to Culinary Arts, but what most sets her apart from others is her dedication and follow-through. This has been evidenced by her “blazing the trail” with innovative menu offerings at the student store this past year. When it was learned that the class that she most wanted to take was not going to be available, she took it upon herself to help develop a class that not only helped the Marketing Program, but led to Jessica being able to use her talents for the betterment of herself and our school.

Most recently, Jessica competed in both the EWHS Iron Warrior Chef Competition and the District Iron Chef Competition where she placed strongly amongst the talented competition.

Her capabilities in the area of Culinary Arts are evidenced by her effortless ability to present food attractively and her desire to try new techniques.

Edmonds-Woodway is proud to nominate Jessica Scott for this distinguished honor!

Fire Service - Edi Zecevic Print E-mail

altEdi Zecevic has been in the Fire Service Technology Program with Edmonds School District #15 for this school year of 2008/2009.  He has received 10 ½ credits through Everett Community College and 14 ½ credits through Olympic College. Edi competed against three (3) other Fire Service Technology Students to achieve this award. Edi had to be in the top four of the class in regards to his grades, as well as competing against three (3) other candidates in a highly competitive three person oral board panel. Edi finished number one, with a combined score of 97.669%.

When Edi came to the Fire Service Technology Class in September of 2008, he had no Fire Service knowledge or experience. Throughout the school year, Edi continually showed that he was able to meet and exceed the challenges that were imposed on him with a very tough Fire Service Technology Curriculum.

As a Fire Service Technology Student, Edi has proven himself to be a great leader and team player. He is a person of sound character and integrity.  In class Edi has continually shown that he is an excellent learner and is always more than willing to help others.  His enthusiasm and motivation during class training is always high, and he continually transfers that enthusiasm onto his peers.  Edi is a pleasant and sincere individual with a passion for making the Fire Service his life long career.

Edi is also a community minded person, always willing to help out with the Fire Service Technology Class Fund-Raisers.  He often took on a leadership role in these fund-raising events and has proven that he truly cares about people and the community that he lives in.

Edi has proven himself to be an excellent leader and a team player.  When asked, he did an outstanding job this year as an acting Company Officer in the absence of his current Company Officer.  I am truly going to miss this outstanding individual next year, but I know that he is going to do well in his pursuit of making the Fire Service his life long career.

Horticulture - Jack Grennan Print E-mail

altIt has been a pleasure having Jack Grennan as a student in the Lynnwood High School Horticulture Program since January, 2009.  Jack demonstrates a high level of proficiency and interest in Horticulture.  He is a serious student with a desire to work with plants.  Jack is currently enrolled in our Beginning Horticulture Class.

Jack applies his acquired knowledge by anticipating what needs to be accomplished and is self-directed. This attitude is imperative when working with a non-forgiving crop, such as bedding plants.  A delayed response for a few hours can ruin a crop, but Jack is observant and takes action. Jack utilizes his time optimally.

Jack not only has a strong interest in plants, he is also caring and works well with others.  He willingly helps other students, often times assisting them without having to be asked. Jack demonstrates strong leadership skills by mentoring students who are struggling with concepts. He is an involved team member, and is a consistent participant in class. Jack is one of those special students that all teachers would love to have in their classes.

I appreciate Jack’s high level of integrity, work ethic, and willingness to help others. It is with great pleasure that I recommended Jack Grennan as a recipient of the CTE Leadership and Achievement Award.

Journalism - Megan Christenson Print E-mail

altI’d like to introduce Megan Christenson, a graduating senior who has taken journalism classes with me since her sophomore year.  Her junior year, she served as an associate editor for the yearbook.  Her senior year, she was elected to the position of editor-in-chief of the yearbook.  Megan has been invaluable to the production of the past two years’ worth of yearbooks.

Megan has natural talent in the fields of organization, writing, and specifically, graphic design.  Under her tutelage, the yearbook has been nearly 100% student run.  As her adviser, I mentor, but rarely do, as that job fell to Megan, who performed it flawlessly.

Megan attended two Journalism Education Association national conventions with me, as well as a Columbia Scholastic Press workshop at Columbia University in New York City.  She plans on studying journalism and graphic design at college, and someday hopes to work for a magazine.

I have had the pleasure of working with Megan for the past three years; I can honestly say that she is one of the best journalism students I have encountered in my 12 years of teaching.

Law and Justice - Mikayla Nelson Print E-mail

altMikayla is a senior in LHS’s Law and Justice class.  She stands out as a student as well as an individual in this class.  Mikayla is one of the most active participants in class and she shows an unusual aptitude for learning the law and related issues.  She is also a very mature and responsible teenager who will do a great job in any law and justice career.  Mikayla has also received an award for academic achievement in History.

In addition, Mikayla is a leader outside of school.  She is a preschool teacher at Sunday School at the Martha Lake Baptist Church.  She also volunteers as a Youth Vacation Bible School leader every summer.  She works at ABC Legal Services in Seattle.

After high school, Mikayla plans to attend the University of Washington Bothell Campus.  She plans to get a degree in interdisciplinary studies.  She also plans to go on mission trips with her church for a few years after college.  She plans to sign up with the army reserves to pay for college.  After this, Mikayla is planning to either attend law school or enroll in a forensics program, and she has also expressed interest in becoming a police officer.

Over all Mikayla is an impressive student who excels in Law and Justice.  She will surely have a promising career in this field, or any other that she chooses.

Media Communications - Keely Points & Zachary Leonard Print E-mail

altKeely first came to my attention during Digital Photography Class.  She was very quiet the whole semester and did not do that well in the class.  At the end of the semester I felt bad that I did not find a way to connect and help her do better in class.  Thankfully, I got a second chance when Keely enrolled in Video Production.  I made sure I discussed each assignment with her.  Keely showed an interest in video production and found friends she enjoyed working in groups with.

After Video Production Keely was not yet enrolled in Hawk TV but volunteered to help out on some of the play and sports productions.

Keely Joined Hawk TV second semester this year and has accomplished much.  Hawk TV is structured in a way that there is not a lot of classroom lecturing by me, rather mostly actual production by students.  Keely is willing to try new things and learn hands on.  With every new challenge presented she gives her best effort and produces excellent work.  The last time she was checking out a camera I was going over some instructions and she said, “Comeaux, I know this, I’m a pro now”

Some students don’t succeed because for whatever reason they are afraid to try.  The great variety of CTE courses available gives students the opportunity to explore different career options until they find something that fits them.  Keely is an excellent example of how every student can excel if given the right guidance and opportunity.  Keely has signed up for Broadcast Production next year where she will be a class leader instructing the new students in the many production jobs she has learned this year.

There are still many areas of Hawk TV she has not explored yet, like news anchor.  I look forward to a new semester of new challenges and new accomplishments.

**************

Zach is proof of the paradox, “if you want something done ask a busy person.”  Zach is the producer of Hawk TV and a three sport athlete.  Zach is dedicated to producing an excellent broadcast to the school every day.  He welcomes new challenges and is a strong leader of the class.  Zach’s leadership skills and adaptability were tested early in the year.  Homecoming with all its events was happening at the same time CTE was completing a wonderful upgrade of the broadcast control room and studio.  Zach lead the class in production of the daily announcements, election videos, Coronation and Homecoming assembly while learning and teaching the ins and outs of the new control room.  Zach coordinated a three-camera field production of the homecoming game but could not join the crew in the booth because he was playing on the field.

In the winter Zach took on the responsibilities of wrestling team captain.  Between practices and meets he still lead the class in recording the school play and producing and hosting the HBN news magazine show.

In the spring Zach took on even bigger responsibilities for baseball…coaching a little league team as part of his senior project.  Zach also lead an HBN production team in producing a corporate training video for a local business, Audio Control.

These are just some of the highlights of Zach’s many contributions to keeping HBN a vital part of the school community.  Zach greets each day with enthusiasm that is contagious and spreads to everyone around him.  I am pleased to honor Zach’s leadership of the Broadcast Production Department and present him with this CTE Leadership and Achievement award.

Photography - Channy Kong Print E-mail

altChanny Kong is an outstanding young person whom I have been lucky to have had as a photography student for the past three years. She has always proven to have high standards for herself, and as a result has created some wonderful works of art. She is always willing to help other students in the class who may be struggling, and everyone benefits from this generous sense of community. Her fun, kind, and caring personality add to the classroom environment in way she probably doesn’t even recognize. She leads by example and raises the bar for quality craftsmanship as well as citizenship.

Channy has a lot of potential, and will do great things given the right opportunities.  As far as the school accomplishments that I’ve witnessed, most recently Channy has taken the initiative to offer to take family portraits for a school fund raiser for a local battered woman’s shelter. She’s also a member of many school organizations including National Honor Society and government. I know that I’m not alone at Lynnwood High School in knowing that Channy will always be willing to help when and where she can. Channy has been able to express herself through the art of photography, and her skills have gotten better and better each semester. I sincerely hope she continues to nurture this gift, and according to her culminating project, she intends to do just that.

I feel that her Cambodian heritage has been both a rich source of inspiration and motivation to Channy. She talks about how lucky she is to have so many possibilities available to her that were not there for her parents, and in fact she will be the first person in her family to attend college. She doesn’t take this knowledge lightly or for granted, but instead takes pride in representing her family and culture in a positive way. It is another facet of Channy that helps to make her so interesting and admirable, and one that I find especially touching. I know that her family pushes her to be her best, and they have succeeded in raising a person who will no doubt add so much to our society.

Photography - Mitchell Eden Print E-mail

altI would like to present Mitchell Eden the Meadowdale High School’s Photography CTE Leadership and Achievement Award for 2008-09.

As a photography student, Mitchell has shown a tremendous amount of talent, drive, and growth.  Mitchell began his photo adventure with me during his sophomore year at Meadowdale High School. Each semester since then Mitchell has been a fixture in the darkroom.  He has completed not only Photo 1 and 2, but two years of Advanced Photo.  Mitchell is one of the few remaining darkroom printers.  His attention to detail and work ethic continue to impress me.

In the classroom, Mitchell is a great role model for the other students.  He is a quiet, but powerful leader.  His work and continued efforts in the darkroom and out, show those around him what it means to set a goal and accomplish it. This year Mitchell chose to use photography as the focus for his senior project.  He has worked hard to find opportunities and create a portfolio of work that he can be proud of.  In addition to his classroom assignments, Mitchell has taken classes, countless roles of film, and printed many, many photos.

Mitchell’s positive influence on others, and dependability earned him my Leadership and Achievement Award this year. I hope to hear where and what he decides to do with all his talents—I know it will be something great!

Business - Eric Jones & Joe DeGrazia Print E-mail

altI have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Eric Jones for the past 4 years.   He completed Digital Communications, Computer Applications 1, Computer Applications 2, he’s been my T.A., Accounting 1, and he is currently taking Accounting 2.

Eric is a very competitive, self-motivated young man.

Business and Marketing is not the field of study that he plans to pursue in college (he will be heading off to Gonzaga soon), yet he has challenged himself to excel in all of these courses—He has expected/received nothing less than A’s .

Upon Completion of Accounting 2, I will have been able to grant him 20 college credits!

I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Joe De Grazia for the past 3 years.  (He is only a Junior)  He, too, has completed Digital Communications, Computer Applications 1, Computer Applications 2, Accounting 1, and he is currently taking Accounting 2.

Business and Marketing is Joe’s field of study!  Good choice, I might add!  Joe works very diligently.  Computers and Accounting are not fields that have come easily to Joe.  He strives to be the best—and all of his hard work has paid off.   Upon Completion of Accounting 2, I will have been able to grant him 20 credits!

Joe, although our schedule has changed for next year AND we are going to a 6 period day, I hope to be able to assist him further as an Independent Study student!

Joe, you too, are a leader and I am proud to award you this “Excellence in Accounting Certificate”.

Carpentry - Dennis Vakulchik Print E-mail

altIt’s my pleasure once again this year to name Dennis Vakulchik as the Career and Technical Education Student of the Year for Carpentry 2009.  Dennis was also presented with this same honor last year.

It’s really been a pleasure to have Dennis in the Carpentry Program for these last two years.  Dennis has been a model student and a major contributor in the classroom and out on the home site.  He is a class leader who leads by example and has earned the respect of his fellow students by working hard and accepting any task that was assigned to him with determination.  His strong work ethics and high grades in Carpentry have earned him multiple honors.  He’s been recognized as Carpentry Class Student of the Month for November in 2007 last school year and twice this school year, back in October and again this last March.  Dennis has also been honored by the Alderwood Rotary Foundation as their Student of the Month for February last school year and again this school year in January.  Also this last January Dennis was chosen as one of two students that went to Olympia and represented the Edmonds Carpentry Program and Running Start for the Trades to the State Education Committee.

Whether it’s in the classroom or on the jobsite, Dennis is there prepared and on time with a positive attitude and the appropriate tools to accomplish the job.

After High School Dennis plans on attending a 4 year college and then taking over his dad’s siding business, which actually may happen much sooner than he originally thought.  I know Dennis will be successful in whatever he plans to do.

Congratulations Dennis!

Drafting - Amanda Cook Print E-mail

It is a pleasure for me to present Amanda Cook with this CTE Leadership and Achievement award.  Amanda has been a student in the Vocational Architectural Drafting program at Edmonds-Woodway High School for the past two years.  She is a highly respectable, conscientious individual who values academic achievement and success in her chosen profession.

As a student, Amanda has achieved success in representing her school, community, and herself through involvement in academic and extra-curricular activities.  In addition to being a National Honor Society member, she is a member of the Vocational Architecture Club and participated and placed 4th in the NW Regional Architectural drafting competition.  She competed in the State and placed 13th.

In the classroom, Amanda has made it apparent that she will someday achieve her goal of becoming an architect.  This is evident in the continuous high quality of exemplary work that she produces.  She is extremely talented and solves problems in a creative and logical manner.  Amanda has also sought experiences outside the classroom in the form of her involvement in Art and Photography clubs, including winning awards and scholarships for her artwork from the Edmonds Art Festival.

Amanda plans to pursue a degree in graphic arts and/or architecture.  Congratulations, Amanda!

FACSE - Doan-Trang Kha Print E-mail

altLynnwood High School, along with the Family and Consumer Sciences department, are proud to present the 2008-2009 FACSE CTE Leadership Award to Doan-Trang Kha, a 4.0 GPA senior at LHS and wonderful representative of the Interior Design and Senior Experience classes she was involved in.  Her plans are to attend Shoreline Community College to obtain her AA degree.  She will determine whether she will pursue a career in Interior Design or in Dentistry in the near future.

In addition to taking Family and Consumer Sciences courses, she has also taken an Entrepreneurship class from our Business and Marketing department and has worked in a Retail store part-time earning Work Experience credit as well.  Her Senior Project was an in-depth project that focused on designing and creating a scale model of an interior of a home accompanied by an in-depth career search on Interior Design.

Doan-Trang moved to the United States almost 3 years ago with her parents and two older sisters who both attend Edmonds Community College.  Since then, she has excelled in her English Language Learning classes and has overall been a bright, intelligent, source of joy to her teachers.

We are excited to see where Doan-Trang will successfully shine her light to others beyond LHS!

FACSE - Sarah Schumacher Print E-mail

altI have had the pleasure of having Sarah Schumacher as a student in the Mountlake Terrace High School Family and Consumer Science program for the past two years.  She has taken six of the courses in our department and has been an amazing model of academic excellence and intellectual curiosity.

Sarah works extremely hard, demanding excellence of herself in all assignments and projects.  I am especially impressed with the maturity of Sarah’s thinking.  She readily questions, collects and analyzes data and then forms rational conclusions and insightful inferences. Sarah has the critical abilities to set goals, evaluate her own performance and follow a task through to successful completion. She is a perfect example of the work-ready skills that we desire all our students to have.

Throughout the time I have known Sarah, she has demonstrated personal responsibility and integrity.  While battling a medical issue that results in several absences a month, Sarah is diligent in her email correspondence and continues to turn-in high quality work upon her return. In the midst of a seeming epidemic of student apathy, Sarah is continually seeking to improve herself and to develop skills for the future.  She has taken and excelled in almost every course that we offer and is using these experiences to find the career that she is best suited for.  In all things, Sarah is humble, respectful and respected by others.

I appreciate Sarah’s high level of integrity; work ethic and dedication to learning.  It is with great pleasure that I recommended Sarah Schumacher as a recipient of the CTE Leadership and Achievement Award.

Health Care Professions - Crizelyn Cabarubias Print E-mail

altI have had the pleasure of having Crizelyn Cabarubias as a student in the Healthcare Professions class since September, 2008.  Crizelyn demonstrates a high level of maturity and interest in the healthcare field.  She is a serious and dependable student.

Crizelyn has never failed to take her course work seriously and integrate new words and knowledge of healthcare into her existing frameworks of understanding. She has never failed to submit thoughtful and first-rate work. Throughout the entire year Crizelyn has maintained a top grade and excelled in all her hands on practice.

The last 10 weeks Crizelyn has been taking care of people in many stages of illness and recovery at Stevens Hospital and Aldercrest Rehab Center. She has displayed extreme grace and compassion as she cared for the individuals she worked with. It has not been uncommon to see Crizelyn taking the extra time to make sure a patient was completely fed or safely tucked back into bed with a smile on her face and complete trust of the patient. The medical staff working with Crizelyn, have nothing but high praise, and look forward to seeing her pursue a career in the industry.

This young lady has a very bright future in the healthcare industry. It is my pleasure to grant this honor to a wonderful young woman for leadership and academic achievement in Healthcare Professions.

Information Technology Team Print E-mail

altIt is my pleasure to award Leeban Ahmed, Anna Schnell, Eugene Hiles, and Joanna Scott this year’s CTE Leadership and Achievement Award for the Information Technology Program.

As part of my Advanced Web Page Authoring class, these students worked together to completely overhaul the Edmonds-Woodway High School web site.  To accomplish this monumental task, they utilized their different strengths and abilities in web technology and design to create a fabulous team.  As a team they worked with the Edmonds-Woodway administration and staff to come up with the design, layout and content of the site.  To build the site they used an open source content management system called Joomla.  Their motivation, curiosity, passion, and intelligence helped them get through the challenges faced to create a professional and high quality web site.  You should go online and check it out.

Since most of my award winners are graduating next week, I do not think they have time to do any web page work, but I would hire them if they did.

I have truly enjoyed working with these students for at least the last two years. Leeban, Eugene, Anna, and Joanna, as always, great job and I wish you good luck. Congratulations!

Law and Justice - Caleb Post Print E-mail

altThe CTE Leadership and Achievement Award in Law and Justice this year goes to Caleb Post.

Caleb has been a student in my Law and Justice class at Meadowdale High since September of 2008.  From the start of the year, he has consistently demonstrated leadership, humor, intellectual curiosity, and creativity in my class.  Caleb has often served as a de-facto teaching assistant; he is always there to help me with copies, materials, or arranging projects, fieldtrips, and other activities.  He is the person who volunteers when I need help.  He is able to lead discussions on controversial subjects such as the death penalty – indeed has commandeered my class a few times!!

The thing I like most about Caleb however, is not that he is a “ Straight A” student, and certainly not that he always agrees with me, or does things as I think they should be done.  What I admire most, is that Caleb is irrepressibly, unapologetically himself.  All any of us can hope to be, is the best possible version of ourselves, and that takes a lot of time, courage and hard work.  But Caleb has already done a lot of that work -- he is kind, ethical, curious, affectionate, intelligent, high-energy, humorous, and very responsible.  He enjoys his life, he is kind to others, and he takes ownership of his own life.  He does not bend to peer pressure.  His intellectual abilities will take him as far as he wishes to go, as a professional – whether that is a police officer or a Senator -- and his heart and spirit will carry him equally far, in serving his loved ones and his community. So, what more could we ask for?

Without reservation, I recommend Caleb for the CTE Leadership and Achievement Award in Law and Justice.

Marketing - Maria Colt & Marney Mason Print E-mail

altA willingness to serve, and a positive attitude, really make all the difference in the world.  Four years ago, as a freshman, I met an energetic young woman with these characteristics by the name of Maria Colt.  This last year Maria took over the single most important position I can offer a student and that is being our Store Manager.  In previous years, we have had three managers run our store, this year I selected Maria as our sole manager.

Maria has been an incredible manager. In addition to abiding by the district’s food policy, she has managed two sets of 27 employees.  Maria has mastered a computerized ordering process used by our largest vender FSA.  On a daily basis she works with all of our vendors keeping them apprised of our store needs and operations.  Maria prepares a weekly staffing document to ensure the store is adequately staffed and then works with the needs of the employees to make sure they are able to fulfill their commitments.  She also prepares monthly financial statements.  On top of this, did I mention she supervises the employees during their shifts?

Her feats as a manager alone have made her indispensable to our operations this year, but there is more.  For her senior project, Maria coordinated the 33rd Dayton National Corporation mock interviews.

In this program, Maria contacted numerous business people asking if they would volunteer to interview beginning marketing students.  She arranged to have 18 business people come in on our interview day, provided them lunch, and an overview of the project, their role, and coordinated over 112 interviews in 60 minutes.

Yes, Maria is amazing!  And it is a privilege for me to present her the CTE LEADERSHIP and ACHIEVEMENT award for the Student Store from Lynnwood High School.

**************

It is a privilege to present Marney Mason for the Marketing / DECA CTE Leadership and Achievement Award from Lynnwood High School.  Marney joined our program this last year and instantly became one of my most valuable people.

There are so many stories to be told about Marney.  In September our program was contacted by the Alderwood / Terrace Rotary club.  They needed personnel to volunteer to sell tennis balls at their major fundraising event “Running of the Balls.”  This event was being held on the first Saturday back from summer vacation in Edmonds.  Without hesitation Marney volunteered and ended up selling twice as many tennis balls as the other nine students who participated.  Marney walked all over Edmonds selling tennis balls that Saturday, but that was only the beginning.

In class she demonstrated an uncanny ability to always have the solutions to problems from Marketing, to Sales, to Economics; Marney had the answers.  She was asked to participate in the DECA Fall Leadership Conference, the Dayton National Conference, and Junior Achievement’s Dare to Dream Auction.  The list goes on and on.

The reason she was selected, requested, and asked to go on so many Marketing events was simple.  Wherever Marney went, her effervescent smile, endearing personality, willingness to serve, and a professionalism seldom seen in teenagers went too.  Marney became indispensable to the LHS Marketing program.

She was selected as one of three student presenters in all of Puget Sound, to present at the JA Business Hall of Fame held at the Paramount Theater.  I could spend the rest of the evening talking about Marney’s accomplishments.

Recently, Marney had her car broken into.  The thief stole two bags (both of which looked like large purses) inevitably in search of cash.  By stealing the bags they did make off with over $90 in cash and Marney’s identity.  But they also made off with all the documents and memory stick of Marney’s senior project that she has worked on for the last 12 months.  They also made off with Marney’s Advanced Placement text books and four months worth of detailed (I mean detailed notes).

Marney is an incredible individual that I am grateful to have had in my class and in my program!

Media Communications - Kristy Nguyen & Anthony Vezetinski Print E-mail

altI truly believe this young woman can do anything.  As our Production Manager for our news show, Kristy was on top of all the many pieces that make up a News Broadcast from the stories chosen, scripts, production deadlines, talent support, to the editing and planning.

When I was gone for two weeks due to a family death, the news class produced two shows.  I know it was an amazing teamwork effort by all the students, but Kristy was the glue that kept it all together.

Not only is Kristy an excellent on air talent/anchor but she always is there to support the other up and coming talent with humbleness, kindness, and major support.  She puts the needs of the news show over her own needs.  She sparkles with enthusiasm and it is contagious. She nurtures the shy ones and encourages the reluctant producers.  Her modesty combined with her remarkable talent is an unbeatable duo. I hope her path continues to broadcast journalism, she is born to it.

Kristi also organized our first ever MDHS Film Festival, and did a truly remarkable job.  She showcased over 40 films and created a program that included screen shots of the films and director comments.  Kristy pulled off what many committees of adults have great difficulty with, a successful, organized and powerful event celebrating what her fellow filmmakers had created.

Kristy has most definitely left a legacy at MDHS that will continue to make a difference in our school. She will be greatly missed.

Four years ago, I discovered the character and a willingness to learn of this young man.  I asked for a volunteer to film an assembly and up shot this hand of a ninth grade animation student.  It was Tony, and he has continued to offer his skills, try new things, and volunteer his talents ever since.

Tony has grown as a filmmaker in awesome ways over the past 4 years. Here are some of his accomplishments:

o   His film “Lonely” a mood/experimental piece on the emotional life of young men, won recognition and made it into the 2008 Images Of Youth Film Festival sponsored by the U of WA

o   He was one of 5 young filmmakers honored by the NW Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, otherwise known as the EMMYs for their film “Immaculate Deception”

o   He was chosen to attend the Seoul Youth International Film Festival and International Youth Filmmaking camp where he won one of the coveted Best Director Awards. What is remarkable to me is that that award was given for the unique collaboration of the group in how they chose to share the directing duties.  It impressed the judges and me.  This is an excellent example of Tony’s ethics and character.

o   He just recently earned Honorable Mentions for his film “The Raven” by the NWHSFF and the 827 Film Festival.

o   Tony is still waiting to hear about his entries to the 2009 Seoul Youth International Film Festival in Korea.

o   He will be attending Evergreen College in the Fall and joining the Media Studies Program there and I know he will continue to grow as a creative and artistic filmmaker and a fine and upstanding young man.

Photography - Kyle Brossoit Print E-mail

altKyle Brossoit is a senior at Edmonds Woodway High School. Focus, thoughtfulness, and intellect have made him a successful student in all academic areas. He is a member of the Deaf Academic Bowl team, an RIT Merit Scholar, and a Presidential Scholar Award recipient. He also helps run the EW Photo Club as Vice President.

After a successful first semester in Beginning Photography, Kyle found that he could not fit photography into his schedule the following year. Instead of letting go, he remained dedicated to shooting film and printing in the darkroom during his free time. This year, Kyle enrolled in Advanced Photography. He has a natural eye for composition and a talent to create interesting photographs. His strengths extend beyond the darkroom into the realm of digital photography, and his dedication to this medium has turned him into a talented artist and photographer. This year Kyle was recently accepted into the Edmonds Art Festival, and received an honorable mention for one of his photomontages. Kyle’s creativity, hard work, and thoughtfulness will continue to help him as he pursues photography, and throughout his educational experiences. Kyle’s dedication to photography has made him a true example of what an amazing student can achieve, and this is why I’d like to present him with the Achievement and Leadership award this year.

Sports Medicine Team Print E-mail

altI am proud to introduce the 3rd and 4th year students of the Edmonds Woodway sports medicine program.  They are (pictured) Cailin Fellows, Elizabeth Gradwohl, and Shelby Smith; (not pictured) Alex Storino and Sabrina Vessey.  They, as a group of students, have been instrumental in bringing the program to where it is today.

For three years these students have been leaders in and outside of the classroom.  They have spent endless hours (each over 500 hours easily) on the sidelines of football games and other events.  They worked through rain, snow, sleet and the sunshine.  If you were to ask any athlete at Edmonds Woodway who can take care of them, all of them would mention at least 2 of the girls.  The athletes look up to them as caring people and ones who support them, coaches depend on them and I especially look to them when I need assistance with athletes or games.

The girls have set a standard in the EW sports medicine program.  The beginning students have all told me that when they become advanced students they want to be as good as, and similar to the five of these girls.  They have the respect from teachers, coaches and student athletes that people would give professionals in the business.  They are very dedicated and very passionate about sports medicine.  They are always willing to help out when needed, and always look to perform better.

These students have helped build this program in the past three years.  When they entered the class, we barely had enough students to run a class.  With their leadership and love for sports medicine, they have made students aware of the class, the program, and have been instrumental in getting students to enroll in the class.  They did this by their dedication and their passion for on/off the field care to the athletes and the sports medicine profession.

I will miss these girls tremendously over the next few years, but I hope they know they are always welcome back to help out.  They need to know that the Sports Medicine program at Edmonds Woodway is more their program than mine, and I am grateful for all the time and energy they have spent in the athletic training room.
