Journalism and Broadcast Production students from Mountlake Terrace High School represented their program, school and community with distinction and integrity at the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association Spring 2007 Convention in Denver.

More than 3,400 students, educators and media professionals attended the four-day conference at the Denver Hyatt. Schools from more than 43 states and several countries were represented. On-Site Write-Offs - 1,479 students participated in on-site competitions where their work was judged against tough national standards.


Students from MTHS earned the following awards: News Writing - sophomore news editor Sharon McClintock earned an “Honorable Mention.” News Magazine Layout - junior opinion editor Kendra O’Halloran earned an “Excellent.” Copy Editing/Caption & Headline Writing - senior tech editor Corina Cheever earned an “Honorable Mention.” Sports Writing - senior sports editor Jordan Gisler earned an “Honorable Mention.” Advertising - Junior photo editor Ji Mun earned the HAWKEYE’s first-ever “Superior” in this category. JEA/NSPA/QUILL & SCROLL/CSPA FIRST AMENDMENT FREE PRESS AWARD Co-sponsored by the Journalism Education Association, National Scholastic Press Association, Quill & Scroll Society, and Columbia Scholastic Press Association give an award that recognizes those schools that actively support First Amendment rights for high school students in practice and policy. MTHS was selected as one of just five recipients of this highly prestigious award for 2007. HawkTV Editor Brittany Hill, HAWKEYE Executive Editor Leah Pope, HawkTV Adviser Angelo Comeaux, and HAWKEYE Advisor Vincent DeMeiro accepted the award at the opening keynote ceremonies on April 12 at the Hyatt's Centennial Ballroom. MTHS first won this award in 2001 – the award’s inaugural year. This is the third time that the school has been selected – 2001, 2006 and 2007.
