eLearning Defined

Electronic learning or E-learning is a general term used to refer to computer-enhanced learning. It is used interchangeably in so many contexts that it is critical to be clear what one means when one speaks of 'eLearning'. (Wikipedia, 2007).

eLearning has become synonymous with Distance Education and Online Education or Classes. In general, eLearning refers to any learning program delivered using digital media and typically via the Internet.  Distance Learning refers to courses in which the learner and instructor do not meet face-to-face, nor even need to reside\work in the same location. Distance Learning classes can be synchronous in which all learners progress through the class at the same pace in the same time frame or asynchronous in which learners move through the class at their own pace. Most online classes are a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities.

A new concept of hybrid or blended classes is emerging in which there is a mixture of face-to-face class time and web-based eLearning.

Whatever the design, eLearning offers new educational opportunities to students and staff.
